What is Colic?

Colic is a medical term that describes myriads of conditions that describes intense and intermittent pain. Most common colic is baby colic, which causes infants to cry vigorously for hours at a time.

   

Renal colic is a pain caused by kidney stone being dislodged from kidney and traveling through urinary tract. The pains felt from renal colic are often reported as the worst person most people have felt in their lifetime. Biliary colic refers to obstruction of bile ducts from gallstone. Horse colic is a condition caused by blockage in gastrointestinal system and often fatal.

Baby colic is a source of frustrations and stress for many parents. Babies suffering from colic cry and scream for hours at a time and there is no known cure for it. Many parents have reported varying degrees of successes using many different treatments available. Some of these may be medical, holistic/homeopathic and simple conventional soothing techniques. However, often the best and only thing you can do is to let it run its course as infant colic typically stops as baby turns four months of age if not earlier.

Renal colic is a painful ailment that comes without warning. The severity and pain depends on the size(s) and number of the kidney stone that has been dislodged. Often renal colic is resolved as soon as kidney stone has been repelled with urine and no special treatments are necessary. In cases where severe pains are experienced, pain medications are often prescribed to manage them. Surgery may also be necessary with larger kidney stones. High volume of fluid consumption is highly recommended to expedite the expelling of kidney stone with urine.

Even though the biliary colic termed colic, the pain is actually dull and continuous. It can last anywhere from half an hour to couple of hours. Vomiting and diarrhea often accompanies the onset of pain. Biliary colic is treated with medications but in many cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the gallstones.

Colic in horse is potentially a fatal ailment that involves pain in abdominal region of the horse. There are many known causes of horse colic and they include but not limited to impaction of foreign objects in intestinal tract and parasites. Colic in horse is a serious condition that must be handled by veterinarian and often requires abdominal surgery to treat the problem.
