Everything you need to know about Colic and Colic Remedies

Colic Prevention

Colic in baby, also referred to as three month colic, is a pediatric condition in which baby cries vigorously for a prolonged period of time. Colic is benign and babies generally grow out of it by the age of three to four months of age with no long-term side-effects.

Colic is generally believed to be caused by complications in gastrointestinal system. Another school of thought for cause of colic is that it is due to immature nervous system development in infants. Because nervous system is underdeveloped in infants, they have little to no control over when to stop crying. Whatever the cause of colic may be, there is no known cure for it which is disheartening for parents.

Is there anything you can do to prevent colic? Although there are no medically accepted preventive measures, many parents successfully treat and prevent colic with organic techniques and home remedies. I've compiled some colic prevention that parents have found much success with. Hopefully at least one of these will be helpful for your precious child!

Baby bottle is often blamed for colic. Some companies produce bottles with claims of soothing or preventing baby colic. It's worth trying these specialized bottles as many parents have reported success with it.

Another preventive measure you can take is feeding your baby sitting upright. Feeding the baby lying on their backs can cause slow digestion and could contribute to colic. While baby is eating, try to induce burping by gently patting his/her back. Burping your baby while he/she is feeding is known to reduce the chance of development of colic. After baby is done eating, keep your baby in upright position for half an hour. This will help them digest food more readily.

There are some homeopathic colic treatments you can explore. These includes but not limited to gripe water, herbal teas and chiropractics. Before you administer any of these treatments, you should consult with your pediatrician to see if they are safe for your baby.

As with all ailments and illnesses, prevention is always better than cure. By following simple steps that could eliminate possibility of colic, you would be saving a lot of headache and frustration that comes with babies suffering from colic.
