Everything you need to know about Colic and Colic Remedies

Colic Calm

Of all the ailments in pediatrics, colic is arguably the most frustrating. There is no universally agreed upon cause and cure for it even though speculations and theories run wild.

With colic affecting nearly 25 percent of all babies, it is the source of many sleepless and worry-filled nights for parents who feel helpless. Colic naturally passes as baby reaches the age of three to four months but those few months may feel like nightmare for parents. Some parents turn to homeopathic remedies for solution and colic calm is one of many available in the market.

Colic calm is essentially gripe water that is designed to relieve babies suffering from not only colic but also hiccups, pain from teething and other gastrointestinal problems. Colic calm is completely natural and claims itself side-effect-free. Looking at the ingredient lists, it contains nine natural homeopathic including chamomile, fennel, caraway, peppermint, ginger, aloe, lemon balm, blackthorn and vegetable charcoal. All the ingredients have passed clinical testing for safety and ingredients by FDA and HPUS.

It specifically states that it contains NO alcohol, sugar, baking soda, simethicone, herbal oils and extracts, citric acid, or artificial sweeteners. These ingredients are often found in other gripe water and omission of them eliminates possibility of unwanted side-effects. All the ingredients of colic calm on paper appear completely safe but you should still consult your pediatrician before administrating any over-the-counter supplements like this.

Effectiveness of gripe water like colic calm is largely anecdotal with no peer reviewed scientific journal to back up any of its claims. In a 2000 review published in Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine found no evidence that supports claims of gripe water alleviating infantile discomfort. Even without any scientific backings, colic calm has large group of people testifying its effectiveness in relieving colic and other gastrointestinal pains.

So should you use colic calm for your baby suffering from colic? That question is ultimately up to you. As with most homeopathic remedies, understand that there are no scientific backings behind its claims. However, if you do decide to try gripe water for your baby's colic, colic calm is an excellent choice. With all of its ingredients passing rigorous clinical tests from FDA, colic calm is considered to be completely safe and side-effect free. At its worst, its sweet taste will appease some babies by taste alone. If it works, it was a small investment and leap of faith you made that solved weeks of frustrations and anxiety!
